School-to-Career Program
The ProStart Restaurant Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management Program was developed to increase the quality and employability of today's high school graduates by providing them with training related to important job skills as well as opportunities for careers and higher education. It was also developed to encourage young people to explore food service as a career option.
Through this program, a partnership is created between schools and their local restaurateurs to provide job-relevant education at the high school level. During internships, job-site mentors work with students to help them put into practice the skills and foodservice concepts they have learned in the classroom.
This program provides instruction in 25 subject areas, ranging from basic food preparation, accounting and cost control, to sanitation and workplace safety. The program encourages high school students to experience all aspects of operating and managing a foodservice establishment, and also helps students build good business and management skills. These skills are vital to our growing foodservice industry.
Students also leave the program with employability skills – like leadership, accountability, teamwork and responsibility – that they can take with them to positions in all industries.

ProStart is the best start for our industry's future
One of the most rewarding initiatives taken by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) is the ProStart program. This is the career-building program that benefits high school students, teachers, program coordinators and partners.
Classroom instruction and on-site experience come together to form the cornerstone of the ProStart program. This exciting and highly practical educational experience is precisely the start our future leaders and managers need. And it's working for nearly 77,000 student participants in more than 1,300 schools, across 48 states, territories and districts.
The goal of the ProStart program is to teach both culinary essentials AND basic foodservice management, preparing students to fill the need of skilled managers in our industry. With this strategy, employers can expect our students to have a broad range of experience - making them a valuable asset to any operation. Click here to view the coursework topics included in the ProStart program.
Whether our students are looking to enter the job market directly after high school, or they plan to attend college, a ProStart student is a solid candidate for success. ProStart students have the experience of learning the restaurant and foodservice industry in the classroom, as well as participating in internships with qualified foodservice operations, while receiving first-hand training from mentors. Back in the classroom, lessons and activities come alive as students make real world connections.
With the ProStart program, students get the chance to see just how bright their future in the restaurant and foodservice can be, and with the benefits of making that commitment at the high school level. Who wouldn't want to hire a current or former ProStart student?
Recently, THE Foundation has launched the GoProStart.com website. The website is a fun and exciting way for students to learn more about ProStart. It is easy to use, fun to browse, and has all the bells and whistles. Students are able to download all neccessary forms, register for prizes, and visit Kaylee on Campus PodCasts. We are very proud of GoProStart.com and encourage all students, teachers, and parents to visit.

Certificate of Achievement
To earn it, students must complete the program, pass two national exams and complete 400 hours of mentored work experience. It is integrally linked to NRAEF scholarship opportunities and articulation benefits at more than 60 of the country’s leading hospitality/culinary arts colleges and universities.
Articulation Agreements
Students who successfully complete the ProStart final examination and ServSafe certification, while meeting the classroom and mentored internship requirements, will have a chance to earn college credit from numerous in-state and out-of-state postsecondary institutions. An articulation agreement encourages postsecondary education while avoiding duplication of efforts and classes for students, and in the long run, saving students time and money!
